carpenter ants toronto

Ants have been at increased levels all over the city of Toronto as we have mentioned in previous posts, this is most probably a direct result of the ice storm we experienced this winter which caused a large number of trees to have to be removed which would disturb the natural habitat of carpenter ants. In addition the storm caused a large amount of damage to homes which in some cases was not able to be quickly repaired. This may have allowed moisture inside these areas. Carpenter ants are attracted to moisture areas and damaged wood to make their nests inside. Today our carpenter ant specialists are servicing Toronto, Scarborough and Etobicoke.

At various locations in the Annex (in Toronto), we have recieved service calls for carpenter ants and pharaoh ants. A number of customers are recieving integrated pest management treatments for ants which include interior and
exterior treatments using a combination of bait and spray. This is often a very common treatment as the bait attacks the colony at its heart, the queen and the residual of the spray takes care of any of the stragglers.

Scarborough has been experiencing an increase in pavement ants. The first weeks in June are often the time when homeowners first open their pools for the year or have their first pool party. Patios and pool decks, especially
those with interlocking brick can be vulnerable to pavement ants. Look for a case study of a call for a pavement ants in Scarborough tomorrow.

Etobicoke has many parks and wooded areas including Centennial Park where trees can foster large carpenter ant colonies. This area would also have been largely affected by the ice storm driving these colonies to create satelite
colonies inside the homes of the residents of Etobicoke.

Ants. Ants. And more ants.

Our number one call this season from customers is for ants. 85% of those calls are about carpenter ants. In Pickering, Richmond Hill, Mississauga and Markham, customers are findind carpenter ants nesting inside their houses. We have noticed an increase in all of the major areas of Toronto. Why? Why are there so many more carpenter ants this year, compared to years passed?

Remember that ice storm this winter? That storm downed a lot of trees. These trees that were removed would have been the natural home for carpenter ants. They love wood, especially wet or decaying wood. When their natural nesting areas are removed, carpenter ants begin to look for homes in other places. Areas that are especially prone to carpenter ants include areas that have many ravines, and wooded areas including Aurora, Markham, Mississauga, Oshawa, Pickering, Scarborough, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Whitby.

Carpenter ants are attracted to moisture areas. This can include kitchens, bathrooms, basements and any area that may have water damage. These are prime spots for carpenter ants to make their colonies.

Because they are a noctural pest, carpenter ants like to make their nests behind the walls where it is dark. Further complicating matters is that fact that only 10% of the nest ever ventures outside the nest. Which means any ant that the homeowner sees in their kitchen or bathroom, has 10 sister waiting back in the nest. This means that there is rarely only “one ant” in a home and for elimination of carpenter ants, a indepth integrated pest management program is needed.

This has been an exceptionally busy carpenter ant season. Harsh winter conditions, polar vortexes and ice storms all contributed to what has been Advantage Pest Control’s busiest carpenter ants season in over 10 years.

Carpenter ants are a wood destroying insect that harbour in many of Toronto’s mature trees. When points of harbourage are disturbed they send this social insect into a frenzy to find new points to nest. Thus making your home a cornucopia of wood and moisture that they thrive in all year round!

What can you do?

If you see black ants inside your home this time of year, it usually means there is a social colony either nesting in your home or looking for ideal pieces of wood to infest. Once infested, they create channels throughout the wood. Thus compromising sometimes integral structural points in your home.

Here at Advantage Pest Control, we have been recieving an influx of calls from customers for Carpenter Ants. Right now, in the spring, is when carpenter ants send out reproductive ants to attempt to start new colonies. The ice storm a few months ago, left many trees damaged or removed which limitted the areas where carpenter ants naturally live. These colonies have been attempting to relocate inside houses.
